Culture night 2016, coffeewerk + press, Galway.

Above the Fold took to the beautiful gallery space at Coffeewerk + Press to host our first Galway Culture Night event.

The purpose of this event was to celebrate design culture in the West of Ireland. We were joined by four wonderful speakers who range their practice from slow methods of production to digitally driven visual narratives.

Gala Tomasso
Gala  is an illustrator based in Connemara, Co. Galway whose illustrative work is recognisable throughout Galway and Ireland.

At the moment Gala undertakes illustration jobs, graphic design work and designs natural cosmetics - all whilst managing a restaurant! You may have spotted her recent illustration for Coffeewerk + Press's new cups.

31 Chapel Lane
31 Chapel lane is situated in the Georgian centre of Limerick City on the west coast of Ireland. With a practice that works across fields of architecture, interiors, creative direction and manufacturing.

31 Chapel Lane celebrates the virtues of quality, durability and structure over those of style, trend and surface. The work emphasises and draws inspiration from traditions and practices that have been refined over time by the disciplines of architecture and craft.

Leon Butler
Leon Butler has worked across a broad range of positions in the media industry as a visual narrative designer, filmmaker, and educator. Since setting up his practice, he has worked with some high-profile clients including Galway International Arts Festival, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and Starbucks.

Leon has recently completed a 12-week residency in Los Angeles with digital agency 72andSunny in their 72u program, and has been appointed as a design innovation research fellow on the Techinnovate program at NUI Galway for 2016-17.

Julie Connellan
Julie Connellan is a contemporary jewellery designer and educator currently living and working in Dublin and Galway. Julie holds an M.A. in Design (Metals) from NCAD, Dublin. In 2009 she graduated from the Berufskolleg für Design, Schmuck und Gerät, Pforzheim, where she studied under Winfried Krüger. She holds a B.A. Hons in European Studies from Trinity College Dublin, 2004.

We had a wonderful time in Coffeewerk + Press for Galway Culture Night and we look forward to celebrating Irelands creative landscape at many more future events!
